The distinctive floral design of the kokum scarf is instantly recognizable, and is frequently associated both with Ukrainian and Indigenous people. Ukrainian immigrants shared them with the Cree, who called them “kokum,” a Cree word for “grandmother.” In many parts of Europe, headscarves are used mainly by elderly women, and this led to the use of the term "babushka", an East Slavic word meaning "grandmother". The design features tossed bouquets of roses, daisies and wildflowers on a black background, with an overlay of elegant metallic gold thread-like stripes.
